The sudden passing of Baylee Johnson, a 24-year-old woman from Sumter, South Carolina, has left her family, fiancé, friends, and communities across Sumter, Lugoff, Elgin, and surrounding areas facing an unimaginable loss. Baylee died following devastating injuries sustained in a tragic go-kart accident while visiting friends. At the time of the accident, she was 15 weeks pregnant with her unborn son, whom she and her fiancé, Justin Lowder, had already lovingly named Johnny.
According to the information shared by her family, Baylee’s long hair became caught around the rear axle of the go-kart as she was coming to a stop. She was pulled backward over the seat, and people at the scene worked desperately to free her, cutting her hair in an attempt to release her. Her father, Rick Johnson, and a friend performed CPR after she stopped breathing. Emergency personnel eventually restored her breathing before transporting her to McLeod Medical Center in Florence.
Baylee remained unconscious and on a ventilator for more than a week while her loved ones prayed and hoped for her recovery. During that painful period, her family continued to hold onto hope, especially as Baby Johnny’s heartbeat remained strong. Ultimately, however, they were confronted with the heartbreaking news that Baylee and her unborn son had both died.
Her father expressed the profound loss by sharing that his daughter and grandson had “went home to Heaven together,” while also thanking everyone who had prayed for and supported the family.
Baylee had reportedly been visiting friends who had recently installed a hobby go-kart track in their backyard. A former competitive go-kart racer, she had not driven one for several years. Her uncle, Pastor Jim Johnson, said she understood the importance of being cautious and initially drove slowly around the track. The tragedy occurred as she was coming to a stop.
