The Ann Arbor, Michigan, community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Ethan White, a 22-year-old University of Michigan graduate whose life was defined by determination, humor, generosity, creativity, and an extraordinary ability to build meaningful connections with others. Ethan died on August 31, 2026, following a courageous battle with diffuse midline glioma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
Despite enduring a lengthy and difficult illness, Ethan continued to pursue the passions and relationships that brought meaning to his life. His perseverance became one of the qualities most admired by the people who knew and loved him. Even while facing a terminal diagnosis, he continued approaching life with humor, curiosity, and an eagerness to experience the world around him.
Ethan graduated from the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor in 2025 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, graduating cum laude. His academic achievement was especially remarkable because he spent more than half of his college years battling cancer. Rather than allowing his illness to define his college experience, Ethan continued participating in the university community and creating memories that will remain with those around him.
Music was another important part of Ethan’s life. He was an accomplished snare drummer with the Michigan Marching Band Drum Line and also performed with the hockey band. His musical journey took him to memorable events, including the Tournament of Roses Parade, the Rose Bowl, the College Football National Championship, and the NCAA Hockey Frozen Four.
Ethan also had a deep passion for sports and writing. He contributed sports coverage to The Michigan Daily and helped co-host the Highway to Hail podcast, sharing his enthusiasm for Michigan athletics with fellow fans.
Friends remembered Ethan for his clever one-liners, warm hugs, generosity, and infectious enthusiasm. He had a special ability to make people feel connected, and his friendships became an important part of his legacy. He also loved traveling, discovering new places, meeting different people, experiencing cultures, and enjoying new foods.
Ethan is survived by his parents, Michelle Sherman and Dr. Eric White; his sister, Rebecca White; grandmother Gail White; aunts and uncles; Chicago cousins; and numerous cherished friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Temple Beth Emeth in Ann Arbor, with Rabbi Joshua Whinston serving as clergy. Shiva will be observed September 3 and September 7 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the home of Dr. Eric White. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chad Tough Foundation.
Ethan White leaves behind a legacy far greater than his years. His academic accomplishments, music, sports writing, friendships, humor, and courage during an extraordinarily difficult illness will continue to inspire those who knew him. Though his life was far too short, the memories he created and the lives he touched will endure.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, University of Michigan community, fellow musicians, sports fans, writers, and everyone fortunate enough to have shared part of his remarkable journey.
