The Abbotsford Police Department responded to a concerning report this evening after multiple members of the public reported seeing a man on the roof of an apartment building in the 2300 block of Whatcom Road carrying what appeared to be a rifle.
Police received the reports at approximately 5:48 p.m., prompting an immediate response from more than 16 officers from across Abbotsford. Given the initial description of a person apparently armed with a rifle, officers moved quickly to contain the area and assess the situation while prioritizing the safety of residents, businesses, and members of the public.
Officers located the individual on the roof and successfully detained him without incident. Police said the individual remained cooperative throughout the investigation, allowing officers to determine the circumstances behind the unusual activity.
The subsequent investigation revealed that the man was an employee of a pest control company who had been carrying an air rifle while conducting bird control work. Although notices had reportedly been posted inside the apartment building to inform residents about the activity, neighboring businesses, nearby residents, and other members of the public in the surrounding area had not received notification.
That lack of broader notification appears to have contributed to the concern that prompted multiple emergency calls. From the perspective of those who witnessed someone carrying what appeared to be a firearm on a building roof, contacting police was an understandable response.
The Abbotsford Police Department expressed appreciation to the members of the public who reported what they observed. Their decision to call 911 allowed officers to quickly attend the location, evaluate the potential threat, and determine whether there was an immediate danger to the community.
The incident also highlights the importance of clear communication when potentially alarming equipment or activities are taking place in public-facing areas. Even when an activity is legitimate, members of the public may not have enough information to distinguish an air rifle being used for pest control from a conventional firearm.
Fortunately, the situation was resolved peacefully, with no reported confrontation or injuries. Officers were able to establish the nature of the activity and ensure the individual was safely detained while they investigated.
