Sebastian Jones Obituary, British Columbia Death – Community Remembers a Life That Touched Many

Ethan White is being remembered as a young man whose determination, warmth and resilience touched countless people during an extraordinarily difficult battle with brain cancer. The Ann Arbor community and those connected with the University of Michigan are mourning his reported passing at just 22 years old, reflecting on a life marked by music, friendship, humor, academic achievement and remarkable courage.

Ethan was known as a talented snare drummer with the Michigan Marching Band and hockey band. Music was an important part of his University of Michigan experience, allowing him to share his energy and enthusiasm with fellow students and fans. Beyond the band, he was also recognized for his academic interests and his work as a writer for The Michigan Daily.

His journey with diffuse midline glioma began after he noticed troubling changes affecting his coordination and ability to play the drums. Medical examinations eventually revealed an inoperable brain tumor. Despite the seriousness of the diagnosis, Ethan continued to demonstrate an extraordinary determination to live fully and pursue every possible opportunity.

A 2025 University of Michigan Medicine profile described Ethan as resilient and hopeful while documenting his battle with the disease. He underwent radiation treatment and later received experimental targeted therapy. His physicians noted that his tumor had responded unusually well to treatment, giving him and those around him reason to hope.

A fundraising campaign created to support Ethan and his family also portrayed him as someone whose warmth, humor, positivity and kindness made a lasting impression. The campaign noted his involvement with children, his work as a camp counselor, his interest in sports and his dedication to his studies.

For those who knew Ethan, however, his story was about much more than a diagnosis. He represented perseverance in the face of circumstances that could easily have overwhelmed him. His willingness to continue pursuing music, education, friendships and the experiences he loved became an inspiration to people around him.

His passing leaves a painful absence among family members, friends, classmates, musicians, educators and members of the wider University of Michigan community. Those who encountered him will remember not simply the illness he endured, but the personality behind it—the young man who brought humor into difficult moments, remained connected to the people he loved and continued moving forward despite enormous challenges.

Ethan White’s life was far too short, but the courage he demonstrated and the relationships he formed created a legacy that will not easily disappear. As loved ones mourn, they can also hold onto the memories of his music, his laughter, his determination and the many ways he inspired others to keep believing in hope.

His story remains a testament to the extraordinary strength that can exist within an ordinary human life, and his memory will continue to live on through the people, music and community he touched.
