The Point Pleasant, West Virginia, community is mourning the unexpected death of Gregory Roush, 55, whose body was discovered Tuesday inside a spare police vehicle belonging to the Mason Police Department. His sudden passing has left family, friends and members of the community searching for answers while authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to West Virginia State Police, Roush drove to the Mason Police Department on Sunday and left his own vehicle in the department’s parking lot. Investigators later determined through surveillance footage that he entered an unlocked Chevrolet Tahoe owned by the Mason Police Department. His body was discovered inside the rear seat of the vehicle on Tuesday.
A family friend reportedly noticed Roush’s vehicle in the parking lot Tuesday and alerted authorities. Mason Police Chief Colton McKinney reviewed surveillance footage, and state police investigators also examined the video as they worked to establish what occurred before Roush was found.
The circumstances surrounding Gregory’s death remain under investigation. His body was transported to the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, which is expected to provide additional information concerning the cause and manner of death. State police have stated that no foul play is suspected at this time.
For those who knew Gregory, the news is undoubtedly difficult to comprehend. An unexpected death can leave loved ones facing an overwhelming mixture of grief, disbelief and unanswered questions. Family and friends are now left to remember the person Gregory was and the moments they shared with him rather than the unusual circumstances surrounding his final days.
His death has also drawn attention throughout Mason County because of the unusual location where he was found. The discovery inside a police department vehicle has naturally raised questions, but investigators have not indicated that criminal activity was involved.
As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to release additional information when it becomes available. Until then, respecting the privacy of Gregory’s family remains important as they cope with their loss.

During this difficult period, heartfelt condolences go to Gregory Roush’s family, friends and everyone affected by his passing. May those closest to him find comfort in the memories they hold and strength in the support of one another.
